Economic Impact of the Global Pandemic

The year 2020 was one of the most challenging periods for Albania’s economy in recent decades. The global COVID-19 pandemic disrupted economic activity across all sectors, with tourism, services, and trade experiencing significant declines.

Albania’s GDP contracted by approximately 3.5% to 4% in 2020, reflecting the impact of lockdown measures, reduced international travel, and lower consumer demand.

Tourism Sector Decline

Tourism, one of Albania’s most important economic sectors, was among the hardest hit. International travel restrictions led to a sharp decrease in visitor arrivals during the peak summer season.

Hotels, restaurants, and tourism-related businesses faced reduced activity, affecting employment and revenue across the sector.

Government Response Measures

In response to the crisis, the Albanian government introduced a series of economic support measures aimed at mitigating the impact on businesses and households.

These included:

  • financial support packages for small and medium-sized enterprises

  • wage subsidies to protect employment

  • liquidity support for affected industries

These measures helped stabilize the economy during a period of uncertainty.

Resilient Sectors

Despite the overall economic contraction, some sectors demonstrated resilience:

Construction and Infrastructure
Ongoing infrastructure projects and reconstruction efforts continued to support economic activity.

Energy Sector
Hydropower production and energy exports remained relatively stable.

Agriculture
Agriculture played a key role in maintaining domestic supply and supporting rural employment.
